Natural Lip Balm Recipe

As a grandma, I am always looking for fun projects to do with my grandkids. Who doesn’t like lip balm, especially when you can choose the colour and flavour yourself?? A great project for getting together with some friends - can even be a birthday party project for your teen.

Lip balm is super easy to make. Why buy lip balm that's full of chemicals and ingredients that actually dry your lips when you can make your own for cheap?   It doesn’t take fancy ingredients, can be put into almost any container, and has so many variations you could experiment for years.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp beeswax (you can find this at craft stores, local farmers markets, etc.)

  • 2 tbsp hard butters (shea butter, coconut butter, cocoa butter, mango butter, etc.)

  • 2 tbsp liquid oils (try our pre-mixed Premium Massage Oil or any combination of carrier oils, like olive, apricot, almond, sunflower, jojoba, avocado, etc.)

Options:

  • 2-5 drops of essential oil, like Peppermint, Tea Tree, Orange, Grapefruit, Lemon, etc.

  • 5-10 drops of Flavour Oils (specially designed for lip balms - do NOT use extracts)

  • Honey to sweeten

  • Natural colours:

    • Pink: alkanet root

    • Black: activated charcoal

    • Green: alfalfa powder

    • Brown: cocoa powder

    • Yellow: turmeric

    • Orange: paprika

    • NOTE: by adding these, you may not get the smooth glide you want. Test them first to see if you like the texture

  • Other colour options:

    • FDC colours

    • Micas

    • Cosmetic grade glitter

    • Pigments and oxides

Instructions:

  1. Heat the beeswax, hard butters, and liquid oils in a double boiler

  2. Remove from heat when fully melted and mixed

  3. Add options while the mixture is still liquid. If adding honey, beat with a fork - it may not all incorporate, but don't worry.

  4. Pour into containers or lip balm tubes

  5. Let cool until solid

Notes:

  • This should be made in a double boiler to prevent burning the beeswax. If you don't have one, simply take two pots that will fit one inside the other. Add water to the larger pot and ingredients to the smaller pot. Heat the water until it is hot enough to melt the ingredients in the top pot

  • If making for a party, double or triple the recipe and divide into separate containers so that you can make different flavours and/or colours. If the batches start to harden before you have a chance to pour into containers, simply re-melt in the double boiler.
